How to make a shadow mask over an object?

Given: there is an illustration of a person on one Layer. Inside the layer are many elements and groups for different parts of the body.

Task: to impose an additional darkened shadow on top of a person (as if he is in the dark) - clearly over his body.

What did you try to do? - On top of the person in the layer, I created a Rectangle with the necessary additional darkening. And I wanted to put it above other elements, select it with the rest - make a mask (CTRL + 7). Nothing happened.

Question: how to solve this moment correctly and quickly? (Manually without cutting for a long time through the Pen Tool).
