How to make a repository with file versions?

I myself am more of a networker, little is known about storage systems.
Need a file washer for documents and photo reports to store file versions for a small business with 5 jobs.
I myself work closely with FreeBSD, as routers, I have never worked with ZFS, but a quick google suggests that ZFS with its snapshots fits very well. Any comments? Other budget storage options?
