It depends on what you mean by "local grid".
If a private encrypted network and you are satisfied with ipv6-only inside it, then link all hosts "each to each" through hyperboria.
If the machines do not have dedicated ip-addresses at all (none of them), then you will have to rent some kind of vps-ku, raise an openvpn server on it and drive all traffic through it.
