How to make a flash drive key for a laptop?

There is an old memory card for a couple of gigs and a laptop. Is it possible to make it so that if there is a card in the laptop, it automatically logs into the system without asking for a password? Or that when the flash drive is removed, the laptop is blocked / turned off?
What other interesting possibilities are there in such a bundle?
To be honest, I want to do this not so much for security reasons, but out of interest.
