How to make a chain effect in Photoshop?

How can I make the effect like in the attached image and still leave the shapes in the vector so that I can resize later? I want to know the best experience

a) make 2 rhombuses in illustrator, copy them into photoshop as a smart object, put a mask on the joints of the rhombuses for a chain effect
b) do everything in illustrator with the help of pathfinder (make a joint), and copy everything into photoshop as a smart object
