How to log in via SSH using a public key?

The person gave me his public key. Can you please tell me what I need to do so that he can log in to my VPS with Ubuntu using this key? The .ssh folder is there, but it's empty.

Add its key in a separate line to ~/.ssh/authorized_keys, if the file does not exist, create it
