How to limit "media file search area" in Android?

The Gallery app on my smartphone (SGS2, Android 4.0.4) displays all the graphics and videos that are in the Android OS. Well, at least those files that are in directories accessible to the user.

I want the Gallery to display only pictures and videos that I have taken with the camera. And the pictures downloaded from the Internet were not displayed. I don’t know how it’s called correctly, so I used the phrase “search area”.

I don’t understand how to set it up ... I tried
the option of creating a .nomedia file . Did not help.

Solving the problem with broken .nomedia (in Honeycomb and ICS):

In short in Russian:
Create .nomedia file in those directories that should be excluded from the "Gallery"
Settings - Applications - Gallery:
Clear cache, Delete data, force stop.
Settings - Applications - Media storage:
Clear cache, Delete data, force stop.
Reboot device.
After launching the gallery, there will be no photos / videos at first, it will index them, and they will appear, but already taking into account the created .nomedia files.

Better use QuickPic and forget about the built-in gallery.
