How to install virtual machines?

Hello.
I really don't know anything about virtual machines. Would like to know how to install them? Which OS to choose for C++ development? Which product to choose for virtualization? Hooked on Habré, but did not find anything worthwhile.
In general, I want to read about them from scratch, after which I can choose what suits me.
Thanks for the help!

What is there to read? Install VirtualBox or VMWare Player (both free), install the OS you need from an ISO image or disk, use it.
Yes, which one do you want. And under Windows, and under any Linux, you can write in C ++, where did you get the idea that you definitely need a virtual machine for this?

Use the OS that you are familiar with.
If you haven't used Linux before, you'll have a permanent fucking track.
If you have Windows and the task is still not to have sex, but to learn C ++, I recommend installing Microsoft Visual Studio Express 2012. It's free.
Then create a console project and go.
