Recently I wanted to install ubuntu next to windows xp, downloaded the iso file and don't know what to do with it and how to install it.

just like with Windows, you write to a USB flash drive, boot, install. There are a lot of tutorials on the Internet, including a guide on the website of Ubuntu itself.
