How to install Linux on a flash drive from under MacOS?

I want to install linux on a USB flash drive so that I can later run linux on a macbook from it, just like a portable OS, not a disk image. Problems are added by the new linux distribution kit eXternOS, about which there is not a word in Runet. I tried to do this using two flash drives, I recorded the image on one, and used the other as a drive for installation, but after the installation is completed, the launch freezes, and when I reboot, Grub (2.02) opens, and it opens even when the flash drive with the OS is disconnected until I choose macOS launch by default.
I want to install this distribution in order to follow the progress of its development.

Well, put it in the furnace, this is another Vasyan craft that will live for a couple of months.
Take VirtualBox, hack a flash drive there and roll Linux onto it. Everything.

Go to https://unetbootin.github.io and download the utility for burning linux iso disk images to usb, then download the netboot version of the linux you are interested in (usually this is an image of several tens of megabytes), burn and reboot from this flash drive. Then go through the installation over the network, on the same flash drive, in a very simple text-based interface.
