How to install gnome?

Tried installing gnome-shell but nothing worked as aptitude said there were unresolved dependencies. How to fix it?

sudo apt-get install gnome --fix-missing
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade --fix-missing
--fix-missing
Will remove old packages, resolve conflicts, fetch necessary dependencies, fetch new packages if required. A smarter and more flexible system update tool.
