How to install GD on Ru-Center?

Adding pictures in Bitrix has failed. The error is like this:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function imagecreatefromjpeg() in /home/***/docs/bitrix/modules/iblock/classes/general/iblock.php on line 2164

According to phpinfo, it turned out that the gd module has disappeared.
And now the main problem. How to install it? Gave the SSH password, the server is running Ubuntu 16.04. The site is hosted on Ru-Center VPS. When I try to install gd I get this error

$ sudo apt-get install php-gd
sudo: /usr/bin/sudo must be owned by a user with uid 0 and have the setuid bit

The root password to correct this misunderstanding is, of course, unknown. As I understand it, on vps nic.ru vps is not really vps, access to the server is limited (unlike the same Infobox, for example).
Any ideas how to return gd?
