Why do you need ftp? If you have access via ssh, then use the winscp utility to transfer files back and forth.

You most likely have an error with the rights to the WordPress files.
Try this commando at the root of your wordpress directory:
It will give permissions to your webserver (nginx or apache on ubuntu)
