The code cannot be added, it really is. You can use AdSense on wordpress.com, only two "buts": the blog must be popular (25 thousand views per month), and earnings are divided in half with the service. Maybe the rules have already changed.

If you want to keep a thematic blog and make money on AdSense, then use blogspot.com, you can insert an ad block there even without climbing in the code, the service is Google (but you are in the HTML code all anyway climb to customize the design).
