How to increase VPN speed with OpenVPN?

Between the VDS and the machine in the locale, a VPN was raised via OpenVPN. Transferring files over VPN via scp is 500KB/s when without VPN 10MB/s.
What does it depend on? And can this uplink be increased?

You most likely have a weak computer. Elementary - does not pull.
Put the processor more powerful.

The tunnel can be lifted not between two machines, but devices. for example, a machine is a router, or a router is a router. I suppose if you entrust the encryption of the tunnel to the router, there should be an increase in the channel bandwidth.
