How to increase the transparency towards the middle of the image?

I have a picture, a round object (let’s say a ball), I need to make sure that 5-10% of the border is normal (that is, not transparent) and the transparency decreases to zero towards the center (in the sense the center is full transparency, the middle of the radius is 50% transparent etc.), how can this be done?
