How to improve the quality of images for the mobile version of the site?

I use mainly PNG images on the site. On the desktop version, everything looks good, but when viewed on a mobile device (iPhone, Android), they look worse. What are the ways to convert desktop images to mobile images? And how are such problems generally solved? Thank you!
