How to improve professional literacy?
I am a beginner programmer who is finishing university. The university gave me a good math education and a good qualification in machine learning, but things are worse with technical things.
I only have a general idea of what TCP IP is, for example, I don’t know any “patterns” of working in Linux (how to do it with a crutch, and how to do it kosher), in general, my professional erudition suffers (it affects the fact that I did not go to a boring OS course).
How can I improve it, go through educational without what I need to know in order to feel more confident?
Can anyone recommend books/blogs/etc.? I know that a lot comes during practice, but I don’t know how I should practice: invent tasks for myself and solve them?
About me: I work as an analyst, doing machine learning. I want to know what the average programmer should know: working on the command line (for example, I don’t know what a tarball is and in general what is so distinctive about it; it seems to be common, but I don’t really want to work with it like a black box ; there are many such trifles, but they form a total uncertainty), some basic things from networks, and even computer architecture. I want to get a basic understanding of the basic issues so that some things stop being magic and become something understandable.
