How to implement npm init in devDependencies?

I started learning npm.
Installed local gulp.
Then I found out that there is npm init - I did it.
Then I found out that dependencies and devDependencies exist.
Found that init sends found packages to dependencies.
Is it possible to somehow send them by default to devDependencies or do I have to manually interrupt packages.json?
