How to implement instant output of tabular data sorted by parameter?

I was impressed with how the table search works, with instant results:

How can this be implemented? From guesses - either the necessary data is pulled up with the help of ajax, or it is implemented with the help of ruby. I myself am not strong in either one or the other (I would like to understand in which direction to dig, because I want to organize something similar on one of the sites that runs on wordpress.
