How to implement a timer?

I know there is a tutorial and there is code for this, but the problem is that it somehow doesn't behave very well. When I use the JS sandbox, Date.now() works fine there, but if I use the same code and run it on NodeJS, it gives unrealistic numbers that shouldn't even exist.
