Conditionally not. By default, disks are dynamic, i.e. small at first and expand with use. But they don't know how to make room.
The only option is to mark the free space inside the container as "free". And carry out the compression procedure, upon the removal of "free" space from the container disk.
What is your container disk format?
Create a new disk, transfer data there, delete the old one. Transfer with software like acronis, paragon, clonezilla
