How to free memory in linux after stopping java process?

Good afternoon.
Elasticsearch allocated 32Gb of memory via Xms and Xmx. After stopping elasticsearch via systemctl stop elasticsearch, the memory was not released and elasticsearch could not be restarted. You have to reboot the node.
How can memory be freed without rebooting the node?
