Licenses for software and other works

How to fork a repository?

I'm forking a repository under the MIT license to add the functionality I need. I plan to publish the modified library.
Can I replace the license (LICENSE file) with my own, or delete it?
Can I rewrite the README file?
Do I have to refer to the author in the license or readme (the repository is already marked as forked)?
I do not plan to claim authorship, solely for ease of use.

Yes, but if you publish, you must indicate that your fork is based on another product under the MIT license.
