How to force the filter to search for a property that is not available in it?

I generate a smart filter url leading to filtering by a specific property. The link is generated correctly, but does not work until the property is set to 'Show in smart filter'. The truth is, I do not need to display it in the filter, I just need to be able to filter by it. Is it possible to hide a property in a smart filter but still be able to filter by it?
