How to find out on what android application is running, on a phone or tablet?

At first I wanted to get the screen diagonal and load the desired layout from this. But on a tablet, which seems to be 10 diagonal, it shows 8 with a tail. I would like to use the desired layout, depending on what the application was launched on. What do you think? How should you do it in general?
