How to enable telnet/ssh on dir-300 router?

I want to have access to the router, not only through the Web interface.
To be more precise, I want to throw tcpdump on the router to sniff traffic.
Has anyone tried doing something like this?

Yes. You need to put DD-WRT on your router.
