How to edit a Chrome extension?

Hello, I want to add an extension in chrome, but when I change the code and restart the browser, it says the extension is damaged. How to do it?

As far as I know, it is possible to make changes to the extension only through the central repository (store), i.e., in fact, only through the extension developer.
Another option: make your own project and upload the modified code there, in theory it might work, but I haven’t tried it.
