How to determine which program sends packets to ubuntu?

Hello, I want to find a real-time outgoing traffic analyzer with the latest history, for a pc with ubuntu, which showed what kind of application was sending data (at least pid).
An Internet search only showed programs that display ip, port, etc.
netstat with the -tp and -up switches does about what is needed, but only on demand.

It's easier to hook write or read from suspicious processes through strace.
