How to determine the level of the OSI protocol model?

It may be a strange question, but still people often ask:

What model does XDR work on?

Can this be determined at all by some criteria, or does everything need to be known clearly from memory?

Here is confirmation.
Still, people often ask:
For example, it is difficult for me to perceive as an engineer with practical experience a person who takes the seven-level model too seriously.
This can generally be determined by some criteria
What for? What will it give? XDR is a layer six protocol, and what follows from this? If the goal is to pass an interview, then it is easier to learn popular options. I think that if you look at this legacy of the 70s (seven-level model) for a very long time, then you can probably see some logic. How this is applied in practice, I do not know. I believe that modern protocol stacks (HTTP over TCP over IPv4 over Ethernet) are more clearly described by the 4 layer model of TCP/IP. Of course, I can assume that in rare cases (X-stack), the OSI model clearly reflects the protocol stack and gives some important consequences that are applicable in practice. Too bad I haven't come across such cases.
