You need to start not with beautiful layouts, but with the basics of layout and understanding of the browser as a whole.
There are plenty of beautiful layouts on the web.

... I do
n't plan to do it professionally in the future
Every time a similar question drives me into a stupor, although 7 years of design from junior to art are behind me.
From the software for Ubuntu - Gimp. In my opinion, there is no other.
To draw beautifully and correctly, unfortunately, it is not enough to read one or two books. It takes years of practice and a mountain of theory along with experience. Everything is the same as with the code, there is no difference.
First of all, think not about beauty, but about convenience. Do not reinvent the wheel, open the most popular sites of large companies on the topic you need and remember, they are pouring a lot of money into statistics, usability, CTP and so on, so you need to take the best. You can sit for 3 nights and try to make a margin-top of 5 or 15 pixels and pick colors without setting until your head swells, but in fact, no one from users will appreciate or notice this. Ask any friend which buttons in VK are rectangular or rounded) And see who says what, although they use it daily, and there the border-radius is 2px. Because no one cares about it, the main thing is that the button is visible and it is pressed.
First you need to decide what exactly you need to do - web design or layout. Each of the directions has its own complexity and its own nuances. And you need to understand for yourself - is it necessary to spend time on this?
1. If you deal with both design and layout at the same time, as a rule, you will not succeed either there or there.
2. If you are serious about design, then your layout will be lame; if you are serious about your design, your design will be lame
. 3. It takes years of study and practice to succeed in both directions.
If you want to do your own projects, it's better to turn to the pros or buy / find free ready-made templates. Simply, as practice shows, a project made through one place does not bode well.
