How to create a font for a logo?

Hello, dear toasters
Recently, I decided to try to participate in a freelance logo design contest.
The customer clearly defined the task of creating his own font in the logo.
My question is - is it worth it to create a separate font yourself, since I think
that this work is quite complicated and long?
And the second question
What if I change a font a little, does it count as mine?

The font is expensive to create, probably the logo needs lettering or something like that. If you modify it, then it is considered yours (Arial and Helvetica), but it is better to google the precedents.
