How to control Raspberry Pi directly via Ethernet?

There is a need to carry a Raspberry Pi with you to the university. At home, it connects to the router and manages it from the desktop via ssh via LAN. At the university, of course, there is no such possibility.
Is it possible to set up a connection by connecting Raspberry and laptop with a cable?

Set up a computer-to-computer network (ip + netmask, without specifying a gateway) - the obvious solution
