How to control hundreds of LEDs with Arduino?

Hello.
There is such a task: there is a room, 100 LEDs are located on the walls in the room. you need to selectively light from 1 to 10 LEDs from a computer via a COM port. There is also an arduino uno, its programming skills and basic knowledge in electronics. How can such a problem be solved? (the problem is to control 100 LEDs with a dozen arduino pins)
Thank you for your attention.

You can use MBI50XX series drivers, shift register + current source - even resistors are not needed. The Lightpack uses such a chip (MBI5026 - 16 channels), for less than a dollar a piece.
