How to continue developing an abandoned repo in git?

I actively use one react plugin, but the repository itself is apparently abandoned by the author. The pool of requests and answers to the issue has not been there for more than a year. I would like to continue the development of this project, taking the original repository as a basis.
I do not quite understand how to do it correctly from the point of view of the git. If I fork the project, then it will say that when I change, I should give the PR to the main repo, but I will not do this because the changes will not be accepted anyway. If I just create a new repo and copy the files from the source, then it turns out quite right, plus I lose the entire history of commits and versions.
