How to connect to VPN on a remote machine?

As soon as I execute the
openvpn myvpn.ovpn
Machine disappears from the Internet. How to make sure that only outgoing connections go through the VPN?
Or at least so that already established ssh sessions are not torn?

what's in the config? override the default gateway in openVPN. then only the traffic that you specify by routes will go
