How to connect moodle to smtp.gmail.com?

Did everything according to the manuals.
Both TLS and SSL. When testing, it gives the error " Your site couldn't communicate with your mail server. Please check your outgoing mail configuration ."
I checked access from the server itself to smtp.gmail.com, pings pass, telnet too. What could be the problem and possible alternatives?

telnet to 587 ? and log in?

The issue was resolved by contacting Google support. What exactly they did they did not say, I close the question, many thanks to everyone.
