All TVs, compared to computer monitors, are famous for supporting a meager number of screen resolutions, often only the number of lines and pixels per line that their LCD matrix is made for. By the way, is the TV - LCD or with a kinescope?
Based on this, you need to set this most supported resolution in your computer, and the screen refresh rate is 50 Hz, all TVs support it. You can also try to lower the resolution to 640x480x50Hz, the TV should also support it, because this is the oldest TV broadcasting standard. Further, you can play around with other resolutions, and if the TV does not reject them immediately, but shows a flickering screen, then try to adjust the frame rate and lines (if you have the appropriate controls).

Unless for fun ... because there is zero sense in such a connection, especially if the telly is "glass" (that is, with a kinescope) - there is most likely 640x480 without any options (why the first monitors went with this resolution :) )
