How to compress mkv file to transfer over network?

Hello.
I have a friend who has poor internet. I want to send him some mkv movies.
It will watch on xiaomi redmi 5 phone.
Everyone praises the movavi video coverter program.
I threw a file in it, put xiaomi on the output and it turns out the following.
The file weighs 2.7gb, the output is 9.4gb.
There you can still reduce, but writes that the quality will be too low.
How else can you compress mkv?
Thanks in advance.

You have a 2.7 gigabyte movie in an mkv container . Video in a container, especially mkv, can be compressed in almost a dozen ways, but the main thing here is not this, but the fact that 2.7 gigabytes is even small for a two-hour movie. Less in volume are already 720p rips with strong compression - for phones. It may be easier for you to find them already compressed in this form.
You will have to compress files for a long time, with some kind of HEVC with fine tuning, which will take you more than 10 hours to encode for a 2-hour movie, and this is without taking into account the time for experiments and determining the optimal settings, plus it’s not a fact that the phone will pull this . In any case, I think you're trying to do work that someone else has already done - just look for smaller sized rips .and choose the one in which you are satisfied with the quality.
