How to compress a large number of files?

There are a large number of text files and pictures / videos, several hundred gigabytes. than they can be "compressed" or simply combined into an archive, with such requirements
1. it was easy to update the content.
2. it was desirable to be able to mount in the file system, again, for updating the content, the
degree of compression does not play a role, it is possible without compression at all or minimal.

Create an empty file, create a file system there, and mount it as a disk.
If you want compression, you can take qcow/qcow2 as a disk format.
