How to choose the version of GLIBCXX for make?

I make from a system that has a newer version of GLIBCXX. When I try to run the compiled file on another system with an older GLIBCXX, I get an error that such and such version of GLIBCXX was not found. How to be? Is there any way to downgrade the GLIBCXX version for make?
