How to check the status of an external hdd?

There is an old hdd usb disk for 2 tb. It is still working, but I would like to know how much is left for him approximately, to somehow check whether he is more likely to be alive or dead. It is desirable that the files on the disk are not affected during the check.
What programs would you recommend for this for Mac OS ?

PS: Disk Utility says "SMART verified", but I'd like more details.
