How to check the performance of the FireWire controller?

The firewire controller (PCI card, Texas Instruments) is correctly detected in the device manager, but at one point it stopped detecting the FireWire device that was connected to it.
There are no other Firewire devices to check, no other firewire controllers either. How can you check the performance of the controller (and understand whether to blame it or the connected device) in such conditions?
I heard that FireWire could support networking by connecting two computers with a FireWire cable directly, so would the controller react to connecting with a cable in itself (it has several FireWire ports).
