How to check the app version on Google Play?

Is there a regular opportunity to find out from my application whether a new version has been released, and which one?
For example, the user has disabled auto-update of the application from the market, but serious functionality has come out and I would like to notify him about it? The only option is to knock on your server or is there such a standard function?
