How to check if username and password are correct (WinAPI)?

There is an IP address of a computer on the network, a username and a password. It is necessary to check their correctness. I couldn't get NetValidateName() to work, so far only a crutch in the form of using NetUserChangePassword() with identical passwords works well. Is there any other way to accomplish the login/password verification task?
