How to check filename for invalid characters?

Some files on my disk contain names containing all sorts of exclamation marks, Chinese characters, etc., so every time I copy them to a fat32 flash drive, I have to rename them so that these characters do not exist. Is it possible to somehow automate this process through a bash script?
