How to cheat the CCP?

Tell me please.
Batteries for phones and PDAs usually have 4 (or 3) contacts, respectively + and -, but what are the other 2 contacts responsible for and how to deceive the device that “there is a battery” that is not inserted accordingly, and another power source is connected.

Once upon a time, I powered my old Samsung D500 from either 5V or 3.3V PC PSU in this way: I
opened the plastic battery cover, took out the battery, brought two wires out, profit.
