If you own SASS & Grunt, then I think you can fix the variables and compile the styles https://github.com/woocommerce/storefront
There are also options in the Customizer - MB will help.
Otherwise it's possible to write CSS. I wouldn't call it crutches. But there is something embarrassing about it, of course.
