disclaimer I don't use MovAvi, but since I asked for an answer, ok.
There is no easy way to overlay a specific background color. In this video (in English) it is proposed to put a ready-made white background as a background, and use the color and tint controls to set a certain non-white color for it.
Another option is to make a picture in Photoshop / Paint, PNG, with the desired color, and put it in the background.
