How to change laptop external screen resolution?

Good day. The problem is this: the laptop monitor - died, it was decided to connect an external one. Bottom line - resolution above 1280x800 does not work. Connecting hdmi (laptop) to dvi-d (screen). Through an adapter. The screen supports resolutions up to 2K. What to do, gentlemen?
